Brett asked cautiously, his head still bowed.

However, without giving him a reply, Marcus suddenly turned around and left.

“See to it that my grandfather receives utmost care. I’m leaving.”

Marcus had arranged for people to search for Millie in Darcley. It didn’t take long before she was located at the hospital.

Millie’s eyes were fixated on him as he made his way into her ward.

Different emotions were churning within Marcus, but his face showed that his concern for her trumped them all.

She looked like an angry little rabbit to him.

Marcus gently touched her forehead as he asked in a low voice, “What are you doing here? Are you ill? What’s the matter?”

Still staring directly at him, Millie asked indifferently, “Is Victor dead?”

She felt his hand, which was on her forehead, freeze the second she asked that question.

Marcus almost exploded in anger, but he managed to calm himself down and said, “He did lose a lot of blood and is currently unconscious, but he will live. Besides that, honey, I’m his grandson. Please don’t say something like that again, okay?”

Millie scoffed, “He’s just unconscious? How could he be so lucky? Why do good people die young, while bad people live a lot longer? Does that seem fair to you?”

Marcus withdrew his hand away from her forehead in shock.

Silence took control of the room for a few seconds. With a warm smile, he sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled Millie into his arms. He gently put his forehead against hers and tried his best to comfort her, “Honey, why are you in the hospital? Tell me what’s wrong. I’m really worried, so tell me.

However, his words seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

“You don’t want to tell me? I’ll ask the doctor, then. He won’t hide the truth from me.” Marcus couldn’t think of any other way.

He was growing increasingly worried about her.

Millie appeared unconcerned over his words. She could only spare him a mocking smile.

Seeing that, Marcus couldn’t help but frown. He had no idea what was up with her. What could be behind her ice-cold behaviour?

Letting his eyes wander about, he caught sight of her swollen hand rested on the quilt.

He carefully held her hand in his and took a good look at it. Studying it, he found that the swelling extended from her wrist. He rolled up her sleeve, only to find out that her arm was even more swollen. In the middle of her elbow was a thick red bruise. He couldn’t believe his eyes.

Just then, he touched her injured leg by accident, which made her draw in a sharp breath.

“Ouch!”

Marcus lifted the quilt so as to have a look at her leg. Her ankle was just as swollen as her hand was. He rolled up her trouser leg and found another bruise.

He immediately pieced together what had happened. Victor had definitely hit Millie with his cane.

There was no way her petite body could take such abuse. If not for the fact that Victor was his grandfather, he would have shot the bastard’s head off.

“Darling, I’m so sorry. Does it hurt? Please forgive me. This is all on me. I didn’t receive your phone call, otherwise, I would have come earlier. None of this would’ve happened if I had followed you to see him.”

Gently, Marcus wiped away the tears that were about to fall from the corner of Millie’s eyes.

He was also trying to complete the puzzle as to what had happened. It seemed Victor wanted Millie to leave Marcus, but Millie refused. He got angry and repeatedly hit her with his cane. Millie couldn’t have sat and watched him do whatever he wanted. She stabbed him in self-defense.

If that was what had happened, then he didn’t blame Millie at all. She only defended herself.

Millie sat quietly on the bed with no expression whatsoever on her face.

Marcus was left flustered. He spoke in a soft voice as he pleaded, “Don’t stay quiet, Millie. Say something. Please talk to me. You can hit me if you want. I won’t complain. Darling, please say something.”
