Everyone present was stunned by Sonia’s sudden announcement about going abroad.
A heavy silence fell over the room as Sonia’s friends struggled to process this unexpected news.
Ariana, sensing something amiss, couldn’t shake the feeling that Sonia was concealing something from them.
Driven by concern, Ariana gently but persistently pressed for answers.
Though Sonia initially remained tight-lipped, the combined patience and careful probing from Ariana and Sarah finally caused her walls to crumble. Her shoulders slumped as she admitted that Maxwell lay at the heart of her decision.
“Maxwell? What’s he got to do with this?”
“Did he ask you to go abroad? Or worse, did his crush push you to do it?”
“Wait-are you and Maxwell planning to leave together?” The questions came flying from Ariana, Sarah, and even Aziel.
Sonia raised her hands slightly to stop them. “No,” she said, biting her lip. “Maxwell didn’t ask me to leave. I made this choice for myself. I just… I can’t seem to get past this mental block.”
Her words plunged the room into a heavy silence.
Understanding the pain behind her words, Ariana instinctively pulled Sonia into a warm, reassuring hug.
No one understood Sonia better than Ariana.
Sonia had built an ironclad exterior, but deep down, Ariana knew just how vulnerable Sonia was. Losing her parents so young had been a brutal blow to Sonia, and growing up surrounded by relatives who cared more about her family’s wealth than her happiness only hardened her.
If she hadn’t cultivated that fierce, fearless persona, Sonia wouldn’t have survived the emotional minefield of her childhood.
Her courage, however, was often a double-edged sword. Beneath the armor, she was more fragile than anyone realized.
Ariana’s heart ached for Sonia, and tears threatened to spill over as she said, “Don’t worry, Sonia. Sarah and I are here for you, no matter what. Whatever you need, we’ll figure it out together.”
Hearing those words, Sonia buried her face in Ariana’s shoulder, letting the tears she had been holding back fall. She cried silently for a while before murmuring a revelation that shifted the atmosphere yet again. “Elsie came to see me once.”
Ariana stiffened, while Sarah’s head snapped up, her face a canvas of disbelief. “Really? What on earth did she want from you?”
The irritation in Sarah’s voice was palpable. Ariana immediately caught the underlying implication-Sarah had always suspected Maxwell had feelings for Elsie.
Before Ariana could correct that assumption, Sonia pulled back from her embrace.
Using the back of her hand to wipe her tear-streaked cheeks, Sonia sighed. “Elsie wanted to clear up some things. She told me that she and Maxwell are not together. They’re cousins.”
Sarah’s jaw dropped while Ariana released a breath of relief.
It seemed Sonia also knew it was a misunderstanding.
“Since you know they’re not together, why are you still leaving?” Ariana asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.
“Even though they’re cousins, there’s a catch,” Sonia said, her eyes darting downward. “Elsie is Maxwell’s uncle’s ex- wife’s daughter. They are not actually related by blood. Maxwell sees her as only family, but… I don’t think Elsie feels the same way.”
Ariana asked, “Did Elsie make things difficult for you?”
“She just clarified her relationship with Maxwell,” Sonia said as fresh tears fell. “Though she never explicitly mentioned her feelings for Maxwell, her words carried clear undertones of challenge.”
“Just retreating like this isn’t your style,” Ariana said, looking at Sonia.
Sonia lifted her chin, wiping away tears with renewed determination. “It’s not like that. I just can’t make sense of my feelings for Maxwell. I need space to think, but he’s constantly around, making it impossible for me to find any clarity.”
